Theodore Touloukian, renowned architect, embarked on a journey to renovate an office suite located in a historical building along Newbury Street. The inspiration for this project was sparked when the existing ceiling was removed, revealing a vaulted concrete structure. This unexpected discovery became the focal point of the design, fostering a sense of connectivity between spaces within the office suite.
What sets this design apart is its open office plan and the strategic use of transparency to highlight the ceiling. Clerestory glass and select openings were employed to allow visibility of the ceiling from multiple vantage points. LED uplighting was used to accentuate this unexpected design feature, creating a visually captivating workspace.
Addressing the acoustic challenges posed by the hard concrete ceiling surfaces, Touloukian incorporated acoustic treatments such as wall panel office dividers, soft surfaces, and carpeting. The result is a harmonious balance between aesthetics and functionality, a space that is as pleasing to the ear as it is to the eye.
The office suite spans 2,500 square feet and features a monochromatic material palette of steel, glass, and light woods. This design project, which took place between 2012 and 2015 in Boston, MA, is a testament to Touloukian's ability to transform spaces and create environments that inspire and connect.
This design has not gone unnoticed in the world of architecture and interior design. In 2015, 38 Newbury Street was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award. This prestigious award is granted to creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
In conclusion, 38 Newbury Street is more than just an office suite. It is a masterful blend of history and modernity, a space that fosters connectivity and inspires creativity. It is a testament to the transformative power of design and the genius of Theodore Touloukian.
