The main concept behind the Light Well design is penetrability. The architects aimed to create a space where sunlight, air, and people can seamlessly flow through every corner. To achieve this, the design features a transparent glass aisle that links the different living spaces together. This glass trail not only allows for the passage of light but also creates a visual connection between the various areas of the house.
One of the standout features of the Light Well design is the raising pathway that leads to the main door. This pathway, made of gray-colored glass, serves as a striking entrance and sets the tone for the rest of the house. The second floor is dedicated to living and working spaces, all connected by the glass aisle and stairs. The third floor is a private area, with glass compartments integrating the pathway. Finally, the fourth floor boasts an outdoor garden that not only adds a touch of nature but also helps regulate the temperature of the lower floors.
The realization of the Light Well design incorporates various technologies and materials. The glass aisle trail brings sunlight from the roof down to every floor, creating a bright and airy atmosphere. The bathtub is placed as an art piece, seamlessly blending with the interior. The staircase flight is built with self-supported thick metal panels, reducing the structure's dimensions and allowing for better air circulation. The flooring is made of a cement paste coated with a layer of waterproof lacquer paint. Additionally, the wood floor surface features a special color formula personally painted by the designer.
The Light Well design is not only visually stunning but also highly functional. The glass elements replace traditional walls and floors, allowing for the penetration of sunlight and creating an open visual experience. Each space within the house appears independent yet interconnected, thanks to the glass compartments that integrate the pathway. This design approach amplifies the visual and actual space, making the most of the limited area.
Located in Taichung City, Taiwan, the Light Well design addresses several challenges commonly faced in townhouse designs. By creatively utilizing penetrability and innovative spatial planning, the architects have transformed a typically unventilated and dark space into a bright and inviting home. The design also incorporates sustainable features, such as the garden on the west balcony that helps reduce heat and the chimney-like windows on the top floor that allow hot air to escape.
The Light Well design has received recognition for its outstanding creativity and ingenuity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category in 2016. This prestigious award honors designs that exemplify best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
