Reviving Maritime Heritage: The Old Yacht Club Transformation

Elliott Architects Melds History with Modernity in Coastal Maine

The Old Yacht Club, once a derelict symbol of coastal Maine's past, has been masterfully transformed into a private residence by Elliott Architects, striking a balance between historical reverence and contemporary living.

At the heart of this architectural revival are two significant alterations that respect the building's storied past while ushering in a new era of functionality. The first is the strategic replacement of a portion of the Club Room with expansive sliding glass panels, and the second, the installation of two modern glass dormers. These changes have redefined the structure as a vessel of light, drawing in the sun's rays by day and glowing as a coastal beacon by night, thus restoring the building's memory as a community landmark.

The challenge of renovating the Old Yacht Club was akin to the philosophical quandary of Theseus' ship, where maintaining the essence of the original while adapting to new purposes was paramount. Elliott Architects' approach was to craft an architectural language that dialogues with the historical elements yet remains distinctly contemporary. This delicate balance of old and new is evident throughout the structure, from the repointed original stone to the preserved framing and wall finishes of the Club Room.

With a commitment to preserving as much of the original fabric as possible, the design team undertook extensive research and documentation of the structure. The foundation underwent significant repairs, and a new structural system was implemented, ensuring the building's longevity. The project, which began design in 2018, saw its construction start in the spring of 2020 and reach completion in the summer of 2023, marking a new chapter in the building's century-long history.

The renovation's success is not solely in its aesthetic appeal but also in its functionality as a single-family residence. The design team, led by Project Architect Corey Papadopoli and Principal-in-Charge Matt Elliott, with designers Buzzy Cyr, Maggie Kirsch, and Elise Schellhase, has created a living space that is both a tribute to the past and a testament to modern living. The Old Yacht Club now stands as a model for adaptive reuse, minimalism, and the integration of light into architectural design.

The project's excellence has been recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in the Architecture, Building and Structure Design category in 2024. This accolade is a testament to Elliott Architects' ability to weave together art, science, design, and technology in a manner that not only showcases technical and creative prowess but also enhances the quality of life and contributes to a better world.
