Ekhtiyarieh Tower: A Triumph of Innovative Design

Reza Mafakher's Masterpiece Merges Functionality and Aesthetics

Ekhtiyarieh Tower, designed by Reza Mafakher of Xema Architects, is a commercial-residential high-rise building that stands as a testament to innovative design and architectural prowess. The project, which was initiated in May 2013, is currently under construction in Tehran's bustling Ekhtiyarieh neighborhood.

The design of the Ekhtiyarieh Tower was inspired by the need to provide a large set of facilities and usages for the densely populated neighborhood. The tower's location near a main highway and its ample parking capacity make it a practical and convenient addition to the area. The design process began with a schema based on the geometry of the site, with the edges of the tower set approximately on the site borders. This was then divided into three smaller triangles to lighten the mass and volume of the building and to serve different functional purposes for residents and other users.

The unique properties of the Ekhtiyarieh Tower lie in its innovative design and functionality. The central open spaces and routes that emerged from the gap between the triangles serve as a public welcoming space for the three towers. These spaces also direct light and facilitate ventilation by introducing outside air into the space. The complex includes a cinema, theater, and meeting hall, as well as a food court on the second floor, offering high entertainment potential for visitors and residents alike.

The tower was realized using a Curtain-Wall System, a non-structural outer covering of a building that keeps the weather out and the occupants in. The use of this system, along with the choice of light materials like glass, reduces the visual weight of the building, making it appear less massive and more friendly to its context.

The design team, led by Reza Mafakher and including Foruzan Vahdati, Soheila Ebrahimi, Tina Rokni, and Nazanin Javanshir, faced the challenge of designing a building that would enhance the vitality and livability of a crowded neighborhood while responding to its main needs. Their research involved asking local people about their needs and conducting a pre-impact assessment with an environment and urban analyst. Their studies showed that the complex would indeed enhance the area's vitality and livability.

The Ekhtiyarieh Tower is a testament to the power of innovative design and architectural prowess. Its unique design, which merges functionality and aesthetics, has earned it the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
