Airland Hotel Shenzhen: A Masterpiece of Budgeted Elegance

Renovation Project Transforms Small-scale Resort into a Pure, Natural, and Romantic Haven

Designed by Honglei Liu, the Airland Hotel Shenzhen is a testament to the power of minimalist design and creative use of natural elements. Despite budget constraints, the renovation project has transformed the small-scale resort into a unique, pure, and romantic space that offers relaxing and pleasant experiences.

The design draws inspiration from the natural world, with the color scheme of the restaurant reflecting sea life, the theme of the western restaurant. The dominant lines in the lobby are formed by wood grains and shadows in the pure white space, creating an effect reminiscent of an abstract painting. The guestrooms, though small, have been designed in an open style to maximize the effect of light and space. Sunlight splashes through the white sheer onto the wall and floor, creating different shadows and lines as the day progresses.

One of the unique features of the Airland Hotel is the natural screen in the buffer zone between the atrium and the western styled restaurant. Resembling a bamboo forest, the screen provides privacy while also delivering an elegant ambiance. The screen is complemented by a sea creature-like light fixture, adding to the sea-life theme of the restaurant.

The renovation project, which started in January 2013 and finished in April 2014, was carried out on a tight budget. However, this did not deter the designers from achieving their vision. They made the best use of the existing space, shaped by the curvy architecture, and introduced natural landscape and sunlight into the interior while keeping the openness and ventilation of the atrium and its surrounding.

The wall and ceiling are mostly finished by the simplest material, white paint, and the flooring is finished by local materials. The details of the design are well crafted, with the color transition bringing with it the change of materials - reflective glass, matt stone surfaces, and natural linen textures contrast with each other; glossy stones contrasting with wood grain gradations enrich the layers and the texture of the space. The scattered pendants illuminating the atrium give the impression of different sea animals happily swimming in a wavy sea.

The Airland Hotel Shenzhen is a testament to the power of minimalist design and creative use of natural elements. Despite budget constraints, the renovation project has transformed the small-scale resort into a unique, pure, and romantic space that offers relaxing and pleasant experiences. The project was awarded Platinum in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2016, recognizing its world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative design that showcases unmatched professionalism and contributes to societal wellbeing.
