Lithuanian Fruits: Innovative Packaging Showcasing Local Fruit Breeds

Packaging Design by Edmundas Jankauskas

Lithuania's Rich Pomology History Inspires Unique Packaging Design

Inspired by Lithuania's rich history of pomology, renowned designer Edmundas Jankauskas has created a captivating packaging design that aims to spread awareness about the country's lesser-known fruit breeds. With a focus on representing the unique properties of each breed, this innovative packaging design is set to make a mark in the market.

Jankauskas's design showcases the distinctive characteristics of Lithuanian fruit breeds through the clever use of color. Each breed is assigned a unique color that represents its taste, structure, minerals, vitamins, and nutritional values. These colors are combined and placed on all four sides of the packaging, resulting in a visually striking and individualized design for each breed.

The packaging itself is made from corrugated cardboard and hay, providing both stability and a delightful aroma. The hay not only keeps the fruits secure but also enhances the natural scent of the produce. To further enhance the tactile experience, Jankauskas has chosen textured paper for the labels, mimicking the texture of apples and pears and providing a more natural touch.

Attention to detail was a key focus during the design process, with a particular emphasis on the user's tactile experience. Opening the package for the first time, the user is greeted with the pleasant touch and smell of nature, evoking the feeling of a fresh garden of fruits.

The Lithuanian Fruits packaging design project was completed in four months, starting in February 2015. Extensive research was conducted, including consultations with fruit-growing specialists, analysis of historical fruit breeding in Lithuania, and referencing specialized books dating back to the 18th century.

Jankauskas faced several creative and technical challenges throughout the project. Summarizing the historical development of fruit breeding in Lithuania in an understandable way was of utmost importance. Additionally, visualizing the unique properties of each breed and ensuring readability and ease of use were key objectives.

This exceptional packaging design has been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2016. The award acknowledges the design's practicality, innovation, and adherence to professional and industrial requirements. By integrating industry best practices and showcasing competent technical characteristics, this design contributes to a better world.
