Huanghongying: A Unique Tea Packaging Design

Highlighting the Richness of Nature and the Harmonious Coexistence of Man and Nature

Inspired by the ecological practices of local tea farmers, designers Wei Dai and Kun Luo have created Huanghongying, a tea packaging design that showcases the natural beauty and sustainable farming methods of Guizhou, China.

When Wei Dai and Kun Luo visited the tea gardens in Guizhou, they were captivated by the awe-inspiring natural environment and the farmers' commitment to ecological protection. The local tea farmers had implemented biological control methods, using beneficial insects like swallows and ladybugs to control pests and diseases, ensuring the tea leaves were free from pesticide contamination. Huanghongying was born out of a desire to celebrate the richness of the local natural ecology and the harmonious coexistence of man and nature.

What sets Huanghongying apart from other tea packaging designs is its ability to encapsulate the essence of its planting environment. Through intricate illustrations, the packaging showcases the diverse climate of the tea mountain and the meticulous environmental management of tea tree growth. These illustrations allow consumers to intuitively perceive the quality support behind the product and appreciate its maximum value.

The packaging of Huanghongying is made from recyclable carton, making it lightweight and easy to carry. The tea itself is divided into small bags, ensuring convenience and preventing cross-contamination. The separate structure of the packaging also allows for easy drinking, enhancing the overall user experience.

With dimensions of 345mm (width) x 165mm (depth) x 85mm (height), Huanghongying is designed to be visually striking while maintaining its functionality as a tea packaging.

Wei Dai and Kun Luo, along with their team, were responsible for the creation of Huanghongying. Their dedication to showcasing the unique ecological environment of Guizhou and the sustainable farming practices of the local tea farmers is evident in every aspect of the design.

Huanghongying was launched in Guizhou in March 2017 and completed in Shenzhen in May 2018. The design received the prestigious IF Packaging Design Award in Germany in January 2019, further cementing its recognition in the industry.

The creation of Huanghongying was not without its challenges. The designers faced the task of effectively conveying the diverse geographical environment and unique planting methods of the tea plantations to consumers without increasing costs. To overcome this, they decided to hand-draw illustrations on the packaging, accompanied by useful data, creating a visually appealing and informative design.

Ultimately, Huanghongying serves as a reminder of the importance of living in harmony with nature. The tea's exceptional taste and freshness are a direct result of the cloudy and foggy mountainous environment, with significant temperature differences between day and night and high humidity. This unique advantage is beautifully captured in the design, emphasizing the ecological concept and the tea's connection to its natural surroundings.

Huanghongying's innovative approach to tea packaging has garnered recognition in the industry. In 2020, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Packaging Design category. This accolade celebrates designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life.
