Marco Manders' Tulpi-bin: A Fusion of Functionality and Aesthetics

Transforming Waste Disposal into an Engaging, Fun Activity

Marco Manders, a visionary designer, introduces Tulpi-bin, a unique waste bin inspired by the beauty of tulips. This innovative design not only enhances the aesthetic value of our surroundings but also encourages responsible waste disposal through its engaging design.

Marco Manders' latest design, Tulpi-bin, is a fresh addition to the Tulpi product line. The design draws inspiration from the tulip, a symbol of beauty in nature. Manders' designs are known for their organic shapes and emphasis on social design. They seamlessly blend with the environment, enhancing its value and appearance while promoting social interaction.

The Tulpi-bin stands out with its cheerful and eye-catching design. It aims to create an atmosphere that encourages people to dispose of their waste responsibly, making the act of throwing away garbage fun. The bin is constructed from a solid round steel post with a welded container tray. It is enclosed by three curved composite petals, giving it the appearance of a tulip. The design is sturdy, meeting the stringent requirements for public furniture.

The Tulpi-bin is not just about aesthetics; it is also about functionality. It comes with a separate inside waste liner that provides a large capacity for waste. The bin is fully accessible and all accessories are interchangeable and can be retrofitted. It can be equipped with an ashtray, a stench damper, and a firework-proof closure. To empty the bin, one simply unlocks the three petals at the top, providing easy access to the removable inner tray.

The design of the Tulpi-bin is a result of extensive research and testing. The design team explored the streetscapes of multiple cities and participated in a Dutch government seminar about litter. They also showcased several prototypes at various fairs and events, gathering observations and feedback from experts and the general public. The bin is designed to resist discoloration, withstand weather conditions, and resist vandalism, meeting the strictest requirements for public furniture.

The Tulpi-bin is a testament to Marco Manders' commitment to creating designs that are not only visually appealing but also socially responsible. It is a perfect example of how design can be used to promote responsible behavior and contribute to a cleaner environment. The Tulpi-bin was awarded the Golden A' Street and City Furniture Design Award in 2016, a testament to its innovative design and functionality.
