Fishing Net Necklace

A Contemporary Fusion of Rococo and Hong Kong Fish Market

Across the oceans and through the ages, Chinese culture has influenced the West. Inspired by the blood and organs of the Hong Kong fish markets, Lydia Marisa Siu has created a unique necklace that contrasts aquatic Rococo design with contemporary elements.

Lydia Marisa Siu, a renowned designer, has crafted the Fishing Net Necklace as part of her Master's degree project at Central Saint Martin. This opulent neck piece combines the intricate ornamentation of Rococo with the frightening and bizarre associations of the Hong Kong fish market, resulting in a stunning fusion of cultures and aesthetics.

What sets the Fishing Net Necklace apart is the meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail. Each piece is handmade using the intricate wax carving technique, allowing for the creation of exquisite structures that showcase the radiant beauty of the jewelry. The necklace features a combination of wax carving, cold enameling, and pearls beading, resulting in a truly unique and eye-catching design.

The dimensions of the Fishing Net Necklace are 150mm x 7mm x 180mm, making it a statement piece that is sure to turn heads. The necklace is designed to be easily worn and taken off, thanks to the pearl clasp.

During her research for this design, Lydia Marisa Siu delved into the rich history of Rococo and its fusion of Eastern and Western influences. She also drew inspiration from contemporary designers like Alexander McQueen and Marcel Wanders, who successfully incorporated historical elements into their designs. Siu's exploration of the Hong Kong fish market provided her with a contrasting source of inspiration, with its monstrous and bizarre aspects serving as a counterpoint to the elegance of Rococo.

Creating the Fishing Net Necklace presented its own set of challenges. Siu had to find a way to make the design contemporary while staying true to the historical influences. Additionally, the size of the finished wax piece posed production difficulties, requiring the necklace to be divided into three pieces for the casting process. However, through her creativity and technical expertise, Siu overcame these challenges and brought her vision to life.

The Fishing Net Necklace was exhibited in London during July and August, following its completion in June 2014. Siu's exceptional design skills and dedication to her craft earned her a distinction for her Master's degree. The necklace has also been recognized with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design category, further cementing its status as an outstanding and creatively ingenious design.

With the Fishing Net Necklace, Lydia Marisa Siu has created a piece of jewelry that not only showcases her talent and expertise but also celebrates the fusion of cultures and the power of design to transcend time and place.
