The Holy Ghost: A Symbolic Chair with Tragic Beauty

A Chair Designed by YI Chen & Muchen Zhang

What does Holy Ghost look like? Nobody knows for sure. But you feel he’s there all the time. Whenever it is mentioned, Holy Ghost is somehow associated with intelligence and mental power; in the doctrine of Christianity, Holy Ghost stands for love. The light of Holy Ghost bathes us in gratitude and love; he’s not an object to experience, but the medium for us to feel alive. When we are touched through Holy Ghost, we perceive the transcendence and presence of deity, which enables us to get to know him and feel him.

The Holy Ghost Chair, designed by YI Chen & Muchen Zhang, is a unique piece of furniture that captures the essence of the Holy Ghost in a tangible form. Inspired by the belief and mental experience of Christians, this chair embodies the sacred and ethereal qualities associated with the Holy Ghost. The designers have created a chair that provokes infinite reverie about deity and spirit, generating an atmosphere of tragic beauty.

The Holy Ghost Chair features brightly polished tubes of different lengths and rhythms, which serve as props to produce rain-like beams. This gives the chair a thin and delicate appearance, as if it is "drifting in air." The use of contrasting colors, with vision-impacting red representing blood and illuminant white representing holy light, adds to the multidimensional imagination and symbolic nature of the chair. It animates the chair with a "soul" and challenges our stereotypes of what a chair should be.

The design of the Holy Ghost Chair is a symbol of spirit, specifically designed with the theme of Christianity in mind. It is invisible and beyond touch, but can be perceived through its abstract and symbolic qualities. The chair invites us to contemplate the transcendence and presence of the Holy Ghost, allowing us to connect with our spirituality and feel alive.

Using fluent shapes and straight lines, the Holy Ghost Chair creates a mode and pure atmosphere, evoking feelings of purity and holiness. Its design also promotes relaxation and comfort, allowing the body to unwind and find solace. The chair is made from steel pipes and is painted to achieve its distinctive appearance.

The Holy Ghost Chair was created by YI Chen & Muchen Zhang in Beijing, China. The project took one month to complete, during which the designers overcame challenges in finding the right balance between straight lines and support for the chair.

The Holy Ghost Chair was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2016. This prestigious award recognizes the chair's outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable level of excellence. It is admired for its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
