Rediscovering Taiwanese Bamboo in Contemporary Furniture

Bamboo has long been a symbol of Taiwanese culture, and the Bow Tie Chair pays homage to this tradition while incorporating a fresh perspective. By utilizing laminated bamboo and heating techniques, the chair showcases smooth curves and excellent shape, reflecting the firm and indomitable spirit of Taiwan.

What sets the Bow Tie Chair apart is its use of Taiwan laminated bamboo. Through repeated combinations of laminated bamboo, the chair exudes simplicity and fashion. The storage area, created by heating bamboo multiple times, features curved elements that not only add visual interest but also provide comfort and ventilation for the user.

The production process of the Bow Tie Chair involves heating and laminating bamboo, resulting in a durable and visually striking piece of furniture. The chair's dimensions measure 94cm x 50cm x 66cm, making it suitable for various living spaces.

Designed by Kuei-Chih Lin and the gridesign studio, the Bow Tie Chair seamlessly blends traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design. The project commenced in March 2015 in Taipei and was completed in June 2015 in Nantou. It was later exhibited at the Tokyo Design Week in October 2015, garnering attention and acclaim.

The Bow Tie Chair not only showcases the versatility of bamboo but also contributes to the development of the bamboo industry in Asia. By introducing a new application for bamboo, this design helps elevate the market value of this sustainable material and promotes environmental consciousness in furniture production.

This innovative chair presented a few challenges during its creation, particularly in constructing the storage area with curved bamboo elements. However, the gridesign studio overcame these obstacles through their expertise and dedication to delivering a high-quality and visually appealing product.

The Bow Tie Chair has been recognized for its excellence in design, receiving the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2016. This accolade is a testament to the chair's outstanding craftsmanship, technical prowess, and innovative approach, evoking positive emotions and admiration.
