Reflexió: A Typographic Revolution

Estudi Ramon Carreté's Innovative Design Project Wins Platinum A' Design Award

Reflexió is a unique design project that explores the transition from digital language to the analog world. With a playful intention, the project simulates pixel with paper, a reversal of the usual process. It is a personal perspective on the change of era in font construction and an invitation to reflect on how to generate images with typography.

The project stands out for its unique properties. By combining the reflection on a mirror with paper letters cut by one of its axes, it creates modular compositions that, once photographed, suggest 3D images. The use of a mirror creates new realities with reflection, which are neither truth nor falsehood, adding an element of magic and visual contradiction to the design.

The realization of Reflexió involved the use of paper, mirror, paper cement, and a camera. The letters, standing at 200mm in height, were constructed on a mirror measuring 1500 x 1100 mm for indoor/outdoor sessions and 200 x 280 mm for A/D pieces. The project started in June 2014 in Barcelona and was completed in January 2017.

The design process of Reflexió involved observing the behavior of letters challenging the basic rules of typography construction. The designer had to delicately retouch each character to correct optical illusions, a task that if not observed, results in poor readability that affects the flow of reading. This challenge was overcome through the exchange of knowledge and experiences between design students and professionals.

Reflexió has been recognized with the Platinum A' Design Award in 2016, an accolade that recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, contribute to societal wellbeing, and advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
