Forward / Behind: A Modern Chair Inspired by Antelope Horn

Combining Traditional Craftsmanship with Organic Elements

The main concept behind Forward / Behind is to return to the basic elements of a chair and simplify its structure. The designer achieves this by using wooden tenons to achieve the strength of a cantilevered armchair. The result is a chair that is not only visually appealing but also sturdy and durable.

One of the standout features of Forward / Behind is its reinterpretation of Nordic design vocabulary. While the design remains simple, the attention to detail is evident. The chair's clean lines and subtle curves create a sense of elegance and sophistication.

In terms of construction, Chia En Weng follows the philosophy of Danish designer Hans J. Wegner, who believed in simplifying the elements of a chair to their most basic form. The chair is constructed using square tenons and wedge tenons, ensuring the stability and strength of the cantilevered arm. The designer sees the chair as a miniature building, with each person who sits in it completing the structure.

Forward / Behind has specific dimensions of 590mm in width, 590mm in depth, and 760mm in height. It is made from high-quality maple and walnut, with the option of fabric upholstery for added comfort.

This design project started in July 2013 in Taichung and was completed in April 2014. It was exhibited at various locations, including Taichung Cultural & Creative Industries Park, Taipei World Trade Center, and Taipei Clove Boutique Coffee. The chair received the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2016, recognizing its outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill.
