Silhouette: A 3D Graphic Font by Cheolhong Kim

Typography with a Subtle and Fascinating Twist

Cheolhong Kim, a renowned designer, has created a unique and captivating graphic font called Silhouette. Inspired by the intrigue of objects covered with a veil, Kim aimed to capture the essence of curiosity and focus in his work. The result is a typography that exudes a sense of mystery and elegance.

Silhouette stands out from other graphic fonts due to its 3D modeling and printing capabilities. Leveraging the advancements in 3D printing technology, Kim designed a set of 3D-modeled alphabets and numbers that can be printed and used in various creative projects. The simplicity of the character meshes allows for a multitude of visual differentiations by manipulating light and texture settings.

To bring Silhouette to life, Kim employed a structured modeling process. He placed meshes of the letters on the backside of a plane, using them as a guide for the modeling process. By utilizing surface modeling techniques, Kim created larger meshes and sculpted the intricate details of each letter. The individual letters can be combined to form any word or phrase, offering endless possibilities for creative expression.

Operating Silhouette is a breeze. As a 3D graphic font, it provides users with the flexibility to experiment with different lighting and texture settings, allowing for the creation of various moods and visual effects. Whether it's a bold and dramatic statement or a subtle and understated design, Silhouette offers a wide range of possibilities.

The Silhouette project began in June 2014 in Seoul and is an ongoing endeavor. The typography has been exhibited twice in October and November 2014 in Seoul, garnering attention and acclaim from design enthusiasts. All images associated with Silhouette are 3D-rendered, showcasing the font's intricate details and visual appeal.

Cheolhong Kim holds the copyrights for Silhouette, ensuring the protection of his intellectual property. This remarkable design has also been recognized with the prestigious A' Design Award. Silhouette was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category in 2016. This accolade is a testament to the design's outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill.
