Tablets, despite their promise of portability, often end up confined to the home. They introduce a new management problem: the need for a purse or a handbag. The Carter, designed by Paul Stet, offers a unique solution to this problem. It's a crossbreed between a pocket and a handbag with braces, designed to safely host an iPad mini or other 8-inch tablets. Alternatively, it can hold a wallet, a passport, a phone, a book, or even a game console. The holster has no opening on its outer side, making it theft-proof and very convenient for the commuter’s lifestyle.
The design of the Carter is unique and practical. It solves for balance and slickness of movement. The braces are highly adjustable and super comfortable. Crafting the holster is almost like building a shoe, with three types of leather combined together with thermoformed PU reinforcement to maintain the shape. The entire product is made of 30 pieces and 12 distinct components.
The functionality of the Carter is slightly different than a shoulder bag. It is more compact and stays tight to the body by connecting the braces to the trousers. More tension in the suspenders allows for more freedom to move without any impediment. Accessing the tablet is fast and easy, with firm magnets securing the closing. Optionally, the long brace can be detached, allowing it to be worn just on the left shoulder like a bag.
The development of the Carter started in January 2015 in Timisoara, Romania and was finalized in September. It was showcased in Vogue's Hot List March edition. The design process involved several trials and prototypes, with people who didn't know what it was about being asked to try the "thing". This allowed Stet to narrow down the issues they encountered with every new trial session.
The Carter has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Golden A' Fashion and Travel Accessories Design Award in 2016. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
In conclusion, the Carter tablet shoulder holster is a revolutionary design that offers a practical and stylish solution for carrying tablets and other essentials. Its unique design and functionality have earned it recognition and accolades in the design world. With its balance, slickness of movement, and theft-proof design, the Carter is truly a game-changer in tablet portability.
