Verso Salad Servers: A Fusion of Art and Functionality

Antrei Hartikainen's Award-Winning Design Inspired by Nature

Antrei Hartikainen, a renowned designer, has created a unique set of salad servers named "Verso". Inspired by the sprouting branches of trees, these servers are a testament to the harmonious blend of art and functionality. The design was recognized with the prestigious Golden A' Design Award in 2017.

The Verso salad servers were crafted for a design competition organized by the Serlachius Museums and Mänttä Craft’s Center in Finland. The design stood out and was chosen as the winner, eventually becoming a part of the museum shop's merchandise. The servers are a unique combination of fine craftsmanship, wood production possibilities, and recognizable design.

The design process for the Verso salad servers began in early 2016. Hartikainen's design was inspired by nature, specifically the way trees sprout new branches. This inspiration is reflected in the servers' sculptural design, which stimulates a sense of growth and development, much like the dining experiences and art encounters they are meant to enhance.

The servers are made by combining CNC milling and hand finishing. Each pair is milled from a single piece of maple wood, then band sawed into form, and finally hand-sanded. The servers are water-treated before receiving their final touch. The end result is a pair of servers that are not only functional but also a joy to behold and use.

The servers measure 310mm in width, 40mm in depth, and 35mm in height. They come without packaging, only a product label that also serves to connect the pair of servers. The label provides details about Verso, and once removed, the user is left with a finely crafted maple wood surface that is comfortable, natural, and visually pleasing.

Despite the challenges of maintaining a clean and simple design while showcasing enough form details, Hartikainen managed to strike a balance between form and functionality. His design research involved studying various wooden objects to understand how details work in functional products. He also conducted practical experiments to explore the diverse possibilities of wood, a recurring theme in his works.

In conclusion, Antrei Hartikainen's Verso salad servers are a testament to the designer's ability to blend art and functionality. The servers are not just a tool for serving salad, but a piece of art that reflects the inner growth stimulated by dining pleasures and art experiences. The design is a reminder that even everyday objects can be transformed into something new and inspiring.
