Goh Chin Siang's Innovative Approach to Cultural Preservation

The Malaysian Festive Packaging Collection, designed by Goh Chin Siang, is a unique packaging box inspired by the annual Malay New Year Celebration, “Hari Raya Aidilfitri”. The design concept, rooted in the traditional theme of “Balik kampung” or returning to one's hometown, aims to evoke nostalgia and a sense of belonging among Malays. Goh Chin Siang's extensive research into Malay culture has resulted in a design that not only celebrates a significant festival but also enhances understanding of Malay traditions among all Malaysians.

The packaging box stands out for its practical and aesthetic features. It is collapsible, foldable, and comes with attached strings for easy portability. The outermost surface, made of Antartic Snow Galaxy 280 gsm, lends a dark lustre to the box, while the company logo and Aidilfitri wishes are embossed in metallic Gold, adding a touch of elegance. The box's dimensions are 9.1cm (thickness) x 25.5cm (height) x 29cm (width).

One of the challenges Goh Chin Siang faced was the client's initial preference for a smaller, traditional green-coloured box. However, the designer believed that a larger, boxy package with different images on each side would better represent the festive atmosphere. Through persuasive presentation and comparison, Goh Chin Siang convinced the client to embrace the new design, which was eventually launched in May 2016, two weeks before Ramadan.

More than just a packaging box, the Malaysian Festive Packaging Collection serves as an educational material, enhancing understanding of Malay culture among all Malaysians. The project was a Silver A' Packaging Design Award winner in 2017, a testament to its creative and professional excellence. The award recognises designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill.
