Copernico: A Unique Stool Design by Kai Hu

Combining Curves and Triangles for a Fun and Functional Experience

Inspired by the design philosophy of "Less is more" and a sculpture outside the Milan Central Station, Kai Hu created Copernico, a stool that challenges the traditional concept of seating. With its unique shape and handmade construction, this stool aims to enhance the brainstorming process and provide a sense of visual satisfaction.

Copernico is a stool made from 35 wood veneer pieces, measuring 220 cm in length and 30 cm in width. The design combines the steadiness of triangles with the relaxing vibe of curves, resulting in a visually appealing and functional piece of furniture. By using as little material as possible, Kai Hu has created an object that is both sustainable and reasonable.

The stool's design language of curves and triangles is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional. It provides a sense of visual satisfaction and creates a fun shape for employees of creative agencies during brainstorming sessions. The stool's unique shape encourages a more casual and engaging conversation, breaking away from the traditional seating arrangements.

One of the key features of Copernico is its stackable design. Three identical pieces can easily stack on top of each other, making it convenient for transportation and storage. This feature adds to the stool's versatility and practicality, making it suitable for various environments.

The production of Copernico involves the use of medium-density board Yin/Yang molds, which are used to shape the wood veneers. The wood veneers are cut and bonded with glue before being placed in the molds. After a few days, the stool is formed and ready for use. The choice of materials, including ashtree veneers and teak veneer decoration, adds to the stool's durability and visual appeal.

With dimensions of 305mm width, 350mm depth, and 390mm height, Copernico is designed to provide comfort and support during extended periods of use. Its unique shape and thoughtful design make it a standout piece in any interior setting.

Kai Hu's creation has received recognition in the design community, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2017. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements.

Copernico is not just a stool; it is a testament to the power of innovative design and the ability to challenge the status quo. With its unique combination of curves and triangles, this stool offers a fresh and engaging seating experience, perfect for creative individuals and design enthusiasts alike.
