The Regeneration project, designed by Steph Lee, is a residential house that embodies a unique concept of modern living. The design takes inspiration from gentle color tones and sunlight transparency to create a space that celebrates the greatness of life. By applying an alternative approach of high-low tiered structure to the open hall area, the design achieves a free style and modern sense without redundancy. The result is a comfortable living space that combines socio-cultural elements with qualities of integrity, purity, and clarity.
One of the key features of the Regeneration house is the L-shaped common hall window, which serves to bring versatile natural light into the space throughout the day. This infusion of sunlight, city views, and greenery creates a spiritual oasis where one can always find peace within. The project started by opening up the overall space for reallocation, and through numerous experimental approaches, a balanced rhythm of light, color, and material was achieved.
The design of the Regeneration house prioritized the creation of independent functions and circulations for work and living spaces. The challenge was to transform and breathe new life into the pre-existing conditions, which included a layout full of constraints, inefficiency in space usage, and a lack of integrity. By introducing a base tone of whiteness, large open areas, and abundant natural light, the design successfully retained space flexibility while enhancing scenic versatility. Elements such as a linear staircase, high ceilings, and a boundless setup further contribute to the overall design.
The Regeneration house spans 165 square feet and is located in Taipei, Taiwan R.O.C. The project was completed in December 2015. Throughout the design process, extensive research and careful inspection were conducted to ensure the correlation between user needs, space layout, building conditions, and surroundings. The result is a living space that embodies the concept of simplification, with plain colors and textures leading the way.
The Regeneration house is a testament to the designer's ability to overcome creative, technical, and research challenges. The 165 square meters space was remodeled into isolated areas of work and living, with the study room featuring a high ceiling and an unconventional design reminiscent of a public library. The artfully arranged wall-covering bookshelves, conference desks and chairs, linear lighting, and hidden storage units create an inviting atmosphere for work and reading. The design seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor scenery, maintaining a graceful harmony between the two.
The Regeneration house has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2017. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate experience, resourcefulness, and strong technical and creative skills. The Regeneration house contributes to quality of life improvements, making the world a better place through its incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology.
