Runner Camp: A Center for Urban Runners

Creating an Urban, Healthy, and Avant-Garde Lifestyle in Shanghai

Runner Camp is a unique platform and store designed by PRISM DESIGN to cater to the needs of urban runners. With its innovative concept and striking design, Runner Camp aims to promote an urban, healthy, and avant-garde lifestyle in Shanghai.

The inspiration for Runner Camp came from the architectural hierarchy distribution of Shanghai, specifically the stark contrast between the number of tall buildings in Putong and Puxi. This contrast is represented in the design through the use of different floors. The first floor represents Puxi, the second floor represents Putong, and the central stair connects the two floors, symbolizing the flow of people and athletics connecting the east and west of Shanghai.

What sets Runner Camp apart is its vibrant and energetic brand color - orange. The designers at PRISM DESIGN wanted to capture the active and energetic spirit of runners, particularly during dawn and dusk, when most runners prefer to go out. Orange perfectly embodies these characteristics, making it an ideal choice for Runner Camp's brand color.

The realization of Runner Camp involved the use of materials that represent both urban and fashion elements. Industrial materials such as metal grid, acoustic fiber board, heat insulation material, and concrete were used for the walls and stairs to create an urban feel. On the other hand, fashion elements were incorporated through the use of materials like orange acrylic, stainless steel wire drawing, and frosted metal boards. One notable feature is the use of metal grids, typically used as drainage covers, as display boards that can be moved around according to seasonal requirements, combining functionality and versatility.

From a functional perspective, Runner Camp comprises two floors connected by a new stair that serves a dual purpose. The first floor is dedicated to the retail shop, while the second floor offers a multifunctional space for professional sport training, complete with LED screen interacting space, exercise areas, membership shower rooms, and supporting facilities.

Located in the Infinite Plaza Shopping Center in Shanghai, Runner Camp was designed by PRISM DESIGN in collaboration with OFFICE COASTLINE. The design period spanned from February 2016 to January 2017, with construction taking place from June 2016 to February 2017.

Runner Camp's design is not only visually striking but also conveys a deeper message. The aim is to promote an urban, healthy, and avant-garde lifestyle in Shanghai, and the design successfully captures this essence. As PRISM DESIGN states, "an urban, healthy, and avant-garde lifestyle is raising in Shanghai," and Runner Camp serves as a testament to this growing trend.

Runner Camp has received recognition for its outstanding design, winning the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2018. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
