Cheil Hong Kong Office: A Creative and Cozy Workspace

Creating a Homey Environment for Innovative Work

Bean Buro Architects designed the new office space for creative company Cheil, which comprises over three floors in an office building in Sheung Wan. The workspace has a total area of approximately 25,000 square feet to accommodate the newly expanded in-house departments, creating a large holistic office for the company’s Hong Kong branch.

The main concept of the Cheil Hong Kong Office was inspired by the adjacent Hong Kong mid-level escalators that connect the neighborhood streets together. Bean Buro Architects implemented a continuous ribbon-like joinery system that wraps around the office, creating a sense of flow and connectivity throughout the space.

The design of the Cheil Hong Kong Office sets it apart from traditional corporate spaces, creating a relaxed atmosphere that encourages rigorous creativity. The workspace reflects the creative culture of the company, allowing cross-departmental staff to feel connected with each other and fostering interactions with external partners or clients.

One of the unique features of the office is the variety of informal meeting places where staff can gather for cozy ideas discussions. These include a comfy lounge with a fireplace, casual in-wall cafe seating, and custom-made diner booths. These spaces provide a comfortable and homey environment, encouraging staff to feel at ease and fostering creativity.

The lighting design of the office is cozy and comfortable, complementing the atmosphere that feels like home. Gallery-style spotlights highlight the artworks on the walls, adding to the overall aesthetic appeal of the space.

The ribbon-like joinery elements in the office are made of recycled chipboard, making them environmentally friendly. Seating upholstery and felt curtains provide acoustic and textural softness, while wall surfaces made of blackboard glass allow ideas to be scribbled during formal and informal discussions.

The Cheil Hong Kong Office project started in November 2013 and was completed in January 2014. Despite budget and time constraints, Bean Buro Architects successfully delivered a creative solution for the playful office. The design consists of a large amount of pre-fabricated elements, reducing the site construction time to only 21 days. These elements have a long life cycle and can be relocated for future use, saving money in the long run.

The Cheil Hong Kong Office was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2015 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The office design integrates industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings to its users.
