Inspired by the radical design movement of the 1970s, Pucciarini embarked on a journey to reconstruct the history of Italian design groups. Her fascination with this era of design, marked by a complete break from tradition, led her to explore new ways of creating designs and implementing them. The book is a testament to these groups' ability to reinvent design practices from scratch.
The unique properties of this design lie in its historical and analytical approach. Pucciarini's research presents an in-depth study of Italian design groups' experiences from the 1960s onwards. The aim is to analyze their developments and the significance they have had in the context of national and international design and architecture. The book also provides tools for understanding the phenomenon in its entirety.
Produced through digital printing on white paper, the book's technical specifications include a size of 200mm x 15mm x 200mm, a paperback binding, and a total of 256 pages. The design process was guided by Academic Supervisor Prof. Arch. Vincenzo Cristallo and took place in Rome from December 2013 to January 2015.
The book's interactive design allows readers to navigate through the chapters divided by decades, either following the index order or jumping from one chapter to another to search for information on specific groups. Additionally, data regarding groups, places, and trends are summarized in graphic diagrams, providing a brief overview of the facts.
The research for this design was based on original publications, monographs, and magazines of the period, and interviews with key figures such as Andrea Branzi, Ugo La Pietra, and Gianni Pettena. One of the most challenging aspects of the project was finding these historic sources due to their rarity and the enormous quantity of material that needed to be consulted.
Francesca Pucciarini's "Design in Italy in Project Groups from 1960 to 1990" was awarded Silver in A' Print and Published Media Design Award in 2017. This prestigious accolade is a testament to the book's outstanding expertise and innovation, showcasing a remarkable level of excellence and introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
