Revolutionizing E-commerce with Innovative Water Bottle Design

Kota Sagae's Kirin Natural Mineral Water: A Blend of Function and Aesthetics

Japanese designer Kota Sagae has revolutionized the e-commerce industry with his innovative design for Kirin Natural Mineral Water. Sagae's design, which won the Platinum A' Packaging Design Award in 2017, harmoniously blends function and aesthetics, creating a product that not only quenches thirst but also pleases the eye.

The inspiration for this design came from a simple observation: bottled water, a daily necessity, often comes in packaging that does not harmonize with the living space. Sagae sought to address this by creating a design that would blend seamlessly with interior decor and fashion trends. The result is a bottled water package that is as much a work of art as it is a functional product.

Sagae's design is unique in several ways. Sold exclusively on an e-commerce site, the product comes in a box of thirty bottles, each featuring one of six different designs. The minimalist design approach places the water itself as the protagonist. The bottle's one-sided product title allows the patterns on the back to be seen through the refraction of water, creating a dynamic visual effect that changes with the viewing angle. This not only enhances the presence of the water but also makes it look more delicious.

The realization of this design involved meticulous attention to detail and a deep understanding of materials. Sagae used transparent ink for printing to maintain the bottle's transparent impression. He also ensured that the six different patterns could be clearly seen even with only transparent ink, foregoing the use of a white plate. The result is a bottle that showcases the beauty of water through its design.

The design specifications further enhance the product's appeal. Each bottle holds 310ml of water and measures 50mm in width, 50mm in depth, and 170mm in height. The compact size and attractive design have led to an increase in repeat customers, with some even reusing the bottles after consuming the water.

The project, which began in Japan in October 2015 and ended in February 2016, presented several challenges. Sagae had to find a way to make the most of water's refraction and ensure that the design looked beautiful when viewed through the water. His efforts paid off, as evidenced by the product's popularity and the prestigious award it received.

In conclusion, Kota Sagae's design for Kirin Natural Mineral Water is a testament to the power of innovative design. It not only meets a basic need but also enhances the user's experience and living space. It serves as a reminder that even the most mundane products can be transformed into works of art with a little creativity and a lot of dedication.
