Shanghai Land Asset Management: A Creative Extension

Investment Office with a Twist

Inspired by the concept of extension, Pan Mok, the renowned designer, transformed Shanghai Land Asset Management's office into a unique space that showcases creativity and sustainability. By reusing old materials and incorporating innovative design techniques, this investment office stands out from the typical formal spaces.

The project's main objective was to repurpose existing or recycled materials within a limited budget and timeframe. Despite the challenges, Pan Mok and his team successfully breathed new life into old metal panels, wooden flooring, bricks, carpet, and ceiling tiles. The result is a visually stunning office that reflects the client's commitment to sustainability.

One of the standout features of the office is the reception back panel, which is made from an old metal panel. By designing "holes" and combining two pieces, Pan Mok created a captivating illusion pattern that comes to life when natural light shines through. This unique design element adds a touch of elegance and intrigue to the space.

The use of recycled materials posed technical challenges during the realization process. The metal panel walls required extensive testing and mock-ups to overcome the difficulties of drilling new holes. However, the perseverance paid off, and the final outcome showcases a beautifully patterned wall that adds character to the office.

The wooden flooring, sourced from local markets, comes in various sizes, measuring approximately 150mm in width and 900mm in length. The ceiling and carpet tiles are standardized at 600 x 600mm, providing a cohesive and harmonious look throughout the office.

Creating an office that embraces the concept of extension and reusing materials was not a common practice in the Chinese market. Pan Mok and his team had to convince the client that "old" does not equate to unusable. By giving these materials a new life, they were able to create a space that is both aesthetically pleasing and environmentally conscious.

The project, which started in February 2016 and concluded in July 2016, was a testament to the designer's dedication to research and exploration. Pan Mok personally visited local Shanghai materials markets to handpick the wooden flooring and metal panels. Additionally, bricks from other sites were repurposed and painted white to create a fresh and modern look for the walls.

Shanghai Land Asset Management's office design received the Bronze A' Design Award in 2017 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious accolade recognizes the outstanding creativity and resourcefulness demonstrated in the project. The office's incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology contributes to improving the quality of life and making the world a better place.

Pan Mok and Kimi Guan are credited with all the photographs capturing the essence of this remarkable design. Their keen eye for detail and composition beautifully showcase the innovative use of materials and the overall ambiance of the office.

Shanghai Land Asset Management's office is a testament to the power of creativity, sustainability, and the transformative potential of design. By extending the life of materials and embracing a unique design philosophy, Pan Mok has created a space that not only inspires but also sets a new standard for investment offices.
