Art Hotel Inspired by Magic

Magic box is one of the important props of a magician, capable of producing unexpected things. Inspired by this concept, designer Yi Xiao Zhang envisioned a space that would be like a magic box, with various changes and surprises. The designer's love for Mondrian works further influenced the design, with scattered fragments reminiscent of magic art. By incorporating these elements into the space, Zhang aimed to create a unique and enchanting experience for guests.

The Magic Box Space is an art hotel that features a living room, bathroom, and bedroom. The main style of the space is industrial minimalism, with gray as the base color. To infuse the space with a sense of magic, splashes of red, yellow, and blue are added. The bedroom ceiling and multifunctional cabinet draw inspiration from Mondrian works, adding a touch of artistic flair to the room. The bathroom follows a minimalist style, maintaining the overall aesthetic of the space.

The realization of the design involves the use of materials such as concrete, marble, and wooden floors. The entire room spans 56 square meters, including the bedroom, living room, and bathroom. The square layout of the space adds to its modern and sleek appeal.

When guests enter the Magic Box Space, they are immediately drawn to the window, which serves as a focal point inspired by Mondrian. As they explore further, the bedroom intensifies the magical experience. The wardrobe and table, designed with Mondrian elements, provide functional yet artistic features for guests to enjoy.

The Magic Box Space project was designed in October 2016 and took approximately a month to finalize the results from research to renderings. Although the project has not been built yet, it showcases the potential for a theme hotel that combines modern art and magic. The design fills the room with geometric art elements, creating a unique atmosphere that blends comfort and contemporary aesthetics.

Yi Xiao Zhang's Magic Box Space design overcame challenges in refining the elements of Mondrian's works and seamlessly integrating them into the indoor space. The goal was to create a space that not only captivates with its artistic appeal but also provides a haven for relaxation in the midst of a bustling city.

This design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018 in the category of Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design.
