Renata Gutierrez and James Rowland, the designers behind Komodo, have reimagined the concept of a bedside table with their innovative and minimalist design. By eliminating unnecessary clutter and focusing on essential functionality, Komodo offers a sleek and modern alternative for the contemporary bedroom.
One of the standout features of Komodo is its wall-mounted design, which allows it to maintain a minimal style while still providing ample space for bedside essentials. The upper surface of Komodo can easily accommodate a glass of water, a phone, and a lamp, while the shelf below is perfect for storing magazines, books, or tablets. The opening to the shelf is strategically placed on the side, allowing for easy access even when reclined.
Handmade from solid hard woods, such as freijó with details in muirapiranga, Komodo showcases the craftsmanship and attention to detail of the designers. Traditional woodworking methods, including hand-cut dovetail joints and angled splines, were employed to ensure the strength and durability of the piece. Special care was taken to account for wood movement due to temperature and humidity fluctuations, ensuring that Komodo remains structurally sound over time.
With dimensions of 440mm in width, 330mm in depth, and 154mm in height, Komodo is designed to fit seamlessly into any modern minimal bedroom. Its sleek and clean lines make it a complimentary addition to a variety of interior styles.
The inspiration for Komodo came from modern architectural designs that prioritize open spaces and minimalism. The designers aimed to reduce a bedside table back to its bare bones while maintaining the functionality required for such an item. The use of drawers, compartments, or a complicated structure was avoided, resulting in a design that is both visually striking and highly functional.
During the construction phase, the designers faced challenges in ensuring the stability and integrity of the piece. By orienting the grain of the wood in a way that allows for expansion and contraction along its width, they were able to prevent any adverse effects of wood movement. The use of dovetail joints not only adds strength but also prevents bending or cupping of the flat surfaces. Additionally, keyhole slots were employed to secure the piece to the wall, providing stability without causing any lateral strain.
Komodo has garnered recognition in the design world, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Komodo's minimalist design and attention to detail make it a standout piece in the world of furniture design.
Overall, Komodo is a testament to the power of simplicity and functionality in design. By reimagining the traditional bedside table, Renata Gutierrez and James Rowland have created a piece that seamlessly blends into modern living spaces while providing essential storage and organization.
