The Indoor Outdoor Bathroom project is an exploration of the theme of indoor-outdoor space. Drawing inspiration from the complex shapes of rocks and lush greenery around waterfalls, the designers have created a space that is neither inside nor outside, but a metaphor of nature. The central piece is a 3-dimensional trellis made of gold-plated jewellery chains that guides air-filtering climbing plants, creating an engaging and transformative environment.
Adhering to the principles of Cradle to Cradle, Bilska de Beaupuy reused existing elements and integrated non-toxic, healthy building materials. The shower screen is made of recycled glass, while the walls, ceiling, and floor feature Tadelakt - a lime-based waterproof plaster. All paints used in the project are low VOC, and the tiles are C2C certified. This commitment to sustainability and circular economy principles is a key aspect of the design's uniqueness.
The project, a refurbishment of a 6 square meter en-suite bathroom, was completed over a year, from February 2016 to March 2017, in central London. The designers faced the challenge of creating a space where the client could feel like she was outside while being inside her bathroom. The solution was to create a design that speaks to the senses and allows the barrier between the indoor and outdoor to be bent.
The Indoor Outdoor Bathroom is not just a space for personal hygiene, but a place where the client can rest and reconnect with herself, providing mental and spiritual nourishment. The fluid form of the golden trellis supporting air-filtering plants and cave-like walls echo nature through architectural forms, creating a serene and tranquil environment.
In conclusion, Bilska de Beaupuy's Indoor Outdoor Bathroom is a testament to the power of design in transforming everyday spaces into extraordinary experiences. By seamlessly blending nature-inspired elements with sustainable design principles, they have created a space that is not only functional but also nourishing for the mind and spirit. This innovative approach to bathroom design sets a new standard for future projects, demonstrating that design can indeed be a powerful tool for enhancing our daily lives.
