Minhan Lin's Award-Winning Restaurant Design: A Study in Contrast

Exploring the Unique Properties and Inspirations Behind the Design

Minhan Lin's restaurant design, a winner of the prestigious A' Design Award, is a captivating exploration of contrast, inspired by the symmetry of the Chinese Taiji diagram. This article delves into the unique properties, inspirations, and challenges behind this remarkable design.

Minhan Lin's restaurant design is a striking study in contrast, drawing inspiration from the symmetry of the Chinese Taiji diagram. The design is divided into two parts, each representing a different world. The left side, representing the Pastry Chefs' world, is a pristine white space adorned with exquisite handmade French desserts. The right side, representing the Cuisine Chefs' world, is a dark, stylish space that provides a stark contrast to the white.

The design's unique properties lie in its use of contrast and symmetry. The white side of the restaurant is decorated with white glossy tiles, white painted bricks, stainless finishing, and bright marble, reflecting the elegance of the desserts. The black side, on the other hand, features black glossy tiles, black painted bricks, blackened metal, and dark wood, maintaining the stylishness of the color while creating a conversation with the white space.

The restaurant design was realized using various materials such as brick, tile, marble, epoxy, and black steel. The space spans 110 square meters and features a folding window that can be wide open when the weather is good, allowing for a seamless transition between the inside and outside.

The project, which started in February 2016 in Taiwan and was completed in May 2016, was a collaborative effort. The design team included Design Director Minhan Lin, Creative Director Weiche Wu, and Interior Designer Name Hsiangchun Lin. The restaurant is located in Taoyuan, Taiwan.

One of the challenges the design team faced was separating a space into two different colors completely, from ground to ceiling. They had to consider the space plan and color separating line simultaneously. However, through careful planning and execution, they were able to create a space that is both comfortable and safe for customers, with a high ceiling and an open kitchen design.

The design was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018, a testament to its outstanding creativity and excellence. This award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that advance art, science, design, and technology.
