Petra: A Unique Auxiliary Table

An Innovative Blend of Marble and Metal

Inspired by the beauty of natural marble, designer Luciano Santelli has created Petra, a stunning auxiliary table that combines elegance and functionality. With its unique design and use of materials, Petra is a true testament to the beauty of art, architecture, and design.

Petra draws its inspiration from the natural veins found in marble, showcasing the uniqueness of each piece. Santelli wanted to highlight the aesthetic beauty and mass character of marble, and thus incorporated it into both the circular top and the counterweight at the base of the table. The connection between these two parts is made possible by a lasercut steel structure that contours the base and supports the table top.

What sets Petra apart from other auxiliary tables is its recessed structure, making it perfect to be used beside or in front of seating or a sofa. The combination of marble and metal creates a visually striking contrast, elevating the overall design. Petra is available in three different variations: Carrara white marble with brass, Guatemala green marble with copper, and Nero marble with a color-keyed epoxy coating.

The production process of Petra involves several steps. First, the steel sheet is lasercut and then pre-polished. Next, it undergoes folding and final polishing. The brass or copper coating is then galvanized onto the steel structure, followed by a clear coat antirust coating. Finally, the marble insert is carefully placed, and the top is secured.

Measuring at a height of 620mm and a diameter of 320mm, Petra is designed to be both functional and visually appealing. Its compact size allows it to fit seamlessly into any space, while its unique design adds a touch of sophistication.

The development of Petra began in November 2015 in Sao Paulo and was completed in May 2016. It was later exhibited at the High Design Fair in August 2016, where it received much acclaim for its innovative design and use of materials.

Throughout the design process, Santelli conducted extensive research on different types of marble and their mass characteristics. This research allowed him to select the most suitable marble for Petra, ensuring both aesthetic beauty and structural integrity. Additionally, finding the right material for the steel structure was crucial, and the precision and variety of finishes offered by lasercut steel sheet made it the ideal choice.

Creating Petra presented its fair share of challenges. Santelli had to find a way to reconcile the different materials and finishes to achieve an original aesthetic result. However, through his creativity and technical expertise, he was able to overcome these challenges and create a truly remarkable piece of design.

With its blend of marble and metal, Petra resembles a piece of jewelry. The counterweight at the bottom adds stability, while the polished marble top showcases the beauty of the mineral. The lasercut metal ribbon, finished in brass, copper, or powder coating, serves as a striking visual element that complements the chosen marble.

Petra has garnered attention and recognition in the design world, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2018. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

With its unique design, impeccable craftsmanship, and innovative use of materials, Petra is a testament to the power of art, architecture, and design to transform everyday objects into works of art.
