Located on Singapore's East Coast, Amber Skye is a stone's throw from the sea and the green recreational corridor leading to Changi International Airport. The design, by Massimo Mercurio and Kimberly Liu, was inspired by the close proximity to the seashore and the endless motion of the waves. The architects sought to create an oasis within the urban environment, offering residents a sense of being sheltered in a seaside resort.
The uniqueness of Amber Skye lies in its dynamic form and user-friendly experience. The architects placed great emphasis on efficient arrangement and natural light, providing generous outlooks for every apartment. The building's façade features a wave pattern, reflecting the seaside location and breaking down the overall mass of the building. This inventive design creates the illusion of autonomy for each apartment and enhances natural light and ventilation.
The sense of individuality is further reinforced by each unit's private lift lobby. The first four floors of the complex step out of the façade in a terracing effect, adding character and allowing for villa-like units with private carparks, gardens, and swimming pools. The design encourages interaction between residents, with facilities like an open dining sky terrace and poolside barbecue areas fostering a sense of community.
The project, which started in February 2014 and completed in April 2017, faced the challenge of minimizing uniformity and animating the building's façade. The architects successfully overcame these challenges, creating a dynamic and non-monolithic massing. The result is a building that not only stands out for its architectural excellence but also for its ability to offer a relaxed retreat from the bustling city center.
Amber Skye's unique design and exceptional execution earned it the Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. Amber Skye, with its unique seaside resort character and user-friendly design, certainly fits the bill.
