Private Residential Chalet: A Harmonious and Elegant Retreat

Creating a Practical and Aesthetically Pleasing Living Space

At the summit of a steep hill, lies a private residential project built to provide their owners with a secondary residence. The project makes the use of a difficult terrain, in order to create a practical and aesthetically pleasing living space. In fact, the triangular plot, which is located on a steep slope, has a setback line that limits design possibilities. This challenging complexity called for an unconventional design. The result is an unusual proportioned triangular building.

Designed by Fouad Naayem, this private residential chalet, located in Faqra Club, Lebanon, is a true masterpiece of architecture and design. Inspired by the earthy colors of the surrounding area, the chalet features a combination of dark and light grey tones, reminiscent of the rocks in the vicinity. Wooden cladding panels add warmth and create a beautiful contrast.

The design of the chalet is characterized by horizontal and vertical linearity, which is most noticeable on the roof. The lines seem to extend radially from the tip of the triangular building, creating a sense of movement and dynamism. The roof itself is inclined at the same angle as the road facing the lateral elevation, seamlessly integrating the design into its surroundings.

One of the unique features of this chalet is its roof, which serves as a haven for tranquility. It is equipped with a small infinity pool that overlooks the tree-filled valley to the west. The roof is also treated as the fourth elevation, reflecting an angular concept based on the topography of the plot and surroundings. This innovative approach adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of the design.

The construction of the chalet took four years, from spring 2014 to summer 2018. Despite the challenges posed by the steep slope and triangular plot, the project has become a landmark in the area. The unconventional design and attention to detail have earned it the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2020.

Throughout the design process, sustainability was a key consideration. The use of zinc cladding, dark grey stones, and HPL wood cladding was carefully chosen to ensure durability and visual appeal. To stay within budget, a cement board-based material with a silver metallic color was used instead of zinc. The inclined roof was designed with flat grey brick tiles to mimic the initial zinc cladding.

Functionality and practicality were also prioritized in the design. Double glass sliding aluminum thermal brake partitions were used for all openings to provide insulation and prevent condensation during winter. A snow melting system was installed on all balconies, terraces, and entrances to avoid snow accumulation.

The chalet seamlessly integrates indoor and outdoor spaces, with green areas integrated at all levels. Two infinity pools reinforce the connection between the interior and exterior, creating a sustainable and harmonious living environment. The roof also houses a studio, hidden technical installations, and storage for terrace outdoor furniture.

Overall, the private residential chalet designed by Fouad Naayem is a testament to innovative design and meticulous attention to detail. It provides its residents with a practical retreat where comfort meets luxury and style. With its unique architecture and integration with the natural surroundings, this chalet is truly a harmonious and elegant retreat.
