Haji Villa: A Rustic Yet Modern Retreat in Lonavala

A Unique Blend of Texture, Comfort, and Sophistication

The Haji Villa, designed by Behzad Kharas, is a stunning residential house located in Lonavala, India. This 5-bedroom villa is a perfect weekend getaway, offering a range of amenities and a unique blend of rustic and modern design elements.

The inspiration for this project came from the desire to create a space that exudes warmth and comfort while maintaining a rustic texture. Kharas and his team conducted extensive research to bring together various elements that would seamlessly blend into the design.

One of the standout features of the Haji Villa is its careful consideration of the local climate conditions and rules. The design takes into account the need for low maintenance, making it an ideal weekend home. The compact plot size of 5000 sq. ft. was utilized efficiently to create a spacious and inviting atmosphere.

The exterior of the villa showcases the use of simple yet elegant materials such as basalt, kota, and flamed granite. These materials not only add a contemporary touch but also ensure durability and longevity. Inside, the villa boasts luxurious and warm elements like wood, wall cladding, marble, and rugs. The use of linen and cotton fabrics adds an earthy feel, perfectly complementing the rustic theme.

Customized furniture and thoughtful placement of wooden glo panels and metal bowls create interesting focal points throughout the villa. The color palette of pristine white with pale grey accents adds a touch of sophistication. The result is a harmonious blend of rustic and modern design elements that create a comfortable and inviting space.

The Haji Villa is not only visually appealing but also functional. The master plan was carefully developed to ensure privacy and convenience. Social spaces were strategically placed to allow women to enjoy the amenities without compromising their privacy. For example, the pool is located near the main villa and is screened off with a vertical green wall, providing a sense of seclusion.

Despite facing challenges such as heavy rainfall and logistics, the project was completed within the designated timeframe. Temporary sheds were set up to allow outdoor work to continue during inclement weather, and careful planning ensured the smooth transportation of materials and furnishings from Mumbai to Lonavala.

The Haji Villa is a testament to Behzad Kharas' innovative approach to design. This unique blend of rustic and modern elements, combined with the thoughtful consideration of the local climate and rules, creates a space that is both visually stunning and functional. It is no wonder that this design was awarded the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2018.
