Enso Table: A Minimalist Masterpiece

Aad Bos Redefines the Coffee Table

The Enso Table, designed by Aad Bos, is a stunning example of abstract minimalism and innovative design. With its unique balance and captivating visual effect, this table is sure to spark curiosity and elevate any interior space.

Inspired by the concept of abstract minimalism, Aad Bos created the Enso Table to explore the 3D effect of rounded shapes in an interior setting. The table's simple yet elegant composition forms different abstract images from every angle, inviting viewers to question its construction and balance. Bos aimed to create a design that would engage spectators and encourage them to explore the table from various perspectives.

What sets the Enso Table apart is its meticulous placement and shaping of the vertical parts that form the legs. This careful attention to detail results in a perfectly balanced table that retains its functionality. Additionally, the visual effect of the two legs changes as one views the table from different angles, creating a dynamic and ever-changing presence in the space.

The realization of the Enso Table involved a combination of artistic inspiration and technical expertise. Bos drew from abstract and minimalist art to shape a functional table that embodies the principles of simplicity and harmony. Extensive 3D studies were conducted to find the optimal minimalist compositions and achieve the necessary balance and visual harmony. The final choice of material was birch plywood with a top layer of oak and walnut veneer, providing both sturdiness and sustainability through CNC milling techniques.

The Enso Table is available in two sizes: 57cm in diameter with a height of 38cm, and 68cm in diameter with a height of 45cm. The packaging of the table also reflects the designer's commitment to sustainability. Corrugated cardboard is used for protective layers, while the package itself is wrapped in white lightweight Kraft Paper, reminiscent of Japanese packaging style.

When placed in an interior space, the Enso Table creates an interactive experience for viewers. Its ever-changing compositions and intriguing construction invite people to consider different viewpoints and engage with the table's design. The Enso Table was developed over several months, with the final product ready in July 2017. It was exhibited at the Dutch Design Week Eindhoven in October 2017, where it garnered significant attention and praise.

Aad Bos's research for the Enso Table delved into the world of abstract and minimalist art, exploring compositions that would translate into a functional table design. A paper model study was conducted to find the three minimalist shaped compositions that achieved visual harmony and balance. The rounded edges of the legs create a "tunnel perspective" visible from specific angles, adding to the table's intrigue. After testing various materials, birch plywood with oak and walnut veneer was chosen for its strength, efficiency in production, and sustainable certifications.

One of the main challenges in creating the Enso Table was achieving a balanced structure while maintaining the visual effect from different angles. The strength of the table was crucial, and this was achieved through the use of notches milled into the bottom of the table top. The result is a clean, well-balanced design that captivates viewers and adds a touch of elegance to any space.

The Enso Table, named after the Japanese word for circle, embodies the essence of Zen Buddhism. In Zen, "enso" refers to the hand-drawn circle that represents the moment when the mind is free to let the body create. With its minimalist shapes and captivating balance, the Enso Table invites viewers to appreciate the beauty of simplicity and engage with the design on a deeper level.
