Tranquility: A Tranquil and Stylish Residential Apartment

A Tranquil Retreat Designed by Cheng Hsuan Huang

The Tranquility apartment, designed by Cheng Hsuan Huang, offers a serene and stylish living space for a modern, independent young lady. With its low-profile design and tranquil atmosphere, this residential apartment is a perfect reflection of the client's personality and preferences. The use of calming colors, natural light, and hidden doors creates a spacious and private retreat that exudes tranquility.

The unique feature of the Tranquility apartment lies in its clever use of hidden doors, which divide the space into two main parts. This not only creates the illusion of a larger room but also provides the client with added privacy. The color palette of the apartment is kept cool and natural, with various shades of gray used to bring out different layers within the space. Gray, known for its calming effect, is used extensively throughout the apartment, from the stone wall behind the TV to the fabrics of the bed headboard and curtains. Even the eco-friendly paint on the walls, made from reusing sludge from reservoirs in Taiwan, contributes to the tranquil ambiance.

Contrasting with the subdued coloring, a vibrant indigo color is used on the sofa to inject life into the room. The materials in black, such as wood veneers, powder coating metals, and marbles, play supporting roles and seamlessly blend with the overall design. The combination of these materials, along with the careful attention to detail, creates a sense of peace and tranquility throughout the apartment.

The Tranquility apartment spans 135.5 m2 and features a foyer, living room, reading room, master bedroom, guest bedroom, locker room, three bathrooms, dining room, and kitchen. The design takes advantage of the apartment's top-floor location, offering stunning views of Taichung city from the spacious terrace and allowing ample natural light to flood the interior through large floor-to-ceiling windows. To cater to the client's needs as a single occupant, one of the small rooms was combined with the original master bedroom to create a larger, more spacious bedroom. The relocation of the bedroom door enhances the flow between rooms, making it more convenient for the client.

The Tranquility apartment project was completed between April and August 2017 in Taichung City, Taiwan. Throughout the design process, Cheng Hsuan Huang conducted in-depth research to understand the client's needs and living habits, striking a balance between practicality and aesthetics. One of the design challenges was the presence of two large beams in the public area of the apartment. Instead of concealing them by lowering the ceiling, the beams were transformed into a feature piece using paint and wood veneers.

The Tranquility apartment, with its low-profile design and tranquil ambiance, is a testament to Cheng Hsuan Huang's skill in creating a stylish and serene living space. This exceptional design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018, recognizing its well-designed, practical, and innovative qualities that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Tranquility apartment truly embodies the essence of a tranquil retreat, offering a peaceful haven for its occupant.
