CardioGraphe: Revolutionizing Heart Imaging

World's First CT Scanner Specifically for 3D Heart Mapping

Unveiling the CardioGraphe, a groundbreaking CT scanner designed by PADWA DESIGN, that has revolutionized the field of medical imaging by focusing solely on the heart. This unique and innovative design has garnered the prestigious Golden A' Medical Devices and Medical Equipment Design Award in 2018.

The CardioGraphe is the first CT scanner in the world that is specifically aimed at 3D heart mapping. The innovative design of this medical device is intended to reduce patient anxiety, create tranquility, and exude the uniqueness and ingenuity of the technology. The scanner's unique properties lie in its ability to emit radiation from two directions simultaneously, focusing solely on the heart, and producing an accurate 3D image in a sixth of a second. This is a significant advancement in medical imaging as the heart is constantly moving and cannot be controlled or stopped at will for accurate imaging.

The design of the CardioGraphe is a departure from the traditional two-panel and screen configuration of most CT scanners. The compact design of the CardioGraphe allows for only one control panel that can be used on both sides. This asymmetrical design creates a dynamic look and evokes a sense of drama. The challenge was to find the right balance between visual impact and calmness, while avoiding a decorative feel. The solution was to use flowing lines and soft forms, while retaining a certain visual tension, achieved by geometrical and "dry" separating lines.

The CardioGraphe was designed and developed over a span of three years in Israel by PADWA DESIGN, with team members Alex Padwa and Gilad Davidi. The covers of the device are made of reinforced fiberglass, with some details in rapid prototyping ABS finished by hand. The device measures 1800mm in height, 1780mm in width, and 2764mm in depth, making it much smaller than most CT scanners.

The design of the control panel was another challenge that the team had to overcome. The requirement was to have only one control panel and use the same one on both sides. The panel is used to direct the patient exactly into the desired position in space. The movements are along three axes. The solution is simple and allows intuitive orientation – all the movements relate to the patient's body. The panel presents the patient's body from side and plan view, and the buttons are part of the body. The operator knows exactly where the patient is going to move to. This design had acquired a patent, and created a unique non-technical look, not to say human.

The CardioGraphe is not just a marvel of design and technology, but a testament to the power of innovation in improving healthcare. It is a shining example of how design can contribute to life-saving technology and prevention of further health deterioration. The CardioGraphe is a testament to PADWA DESIGN's commitment to pushing the boundaries of design and technology.
