Johnson Huang's Lane 19 Art St.: A Testament to Sustainable Living

Residential Apartment Design Combines Aesthetics and Energy Efficiency

Johnson Huang, a Taiwan-based interior designer, has created a residential apartment that marries modern design aesthetics with energy-saving principles. His project, Lane 19 Art St., is a testament to sustainable living and has been awarded the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018.

The inspiration behind Lane 19 Art St. was to conserve energy and reduce carbon emissions. Huang's approach involved minimizing electricity usage and integrating the concept of green building. The materials used were common and accessible, requiring minimal processing to further reduce carbon emissions.

As an interior designer himself, the homeowner was keen on energy conservation. This shared interest formed the basis of the project. Huang removed partition walls to maximize natural light and designed a free-flowing living area. He also installed a circulating water system to prevent wastage while waiting for hot water and a geothermal system to combat cold floors during winter.

Furthering the energy-saving concept, Huang replaced the original east-facing French window with straight-type transoms. This design choice not only allowed natural wind to flow into the space but also lowered the indoor temperature, reducing the need for air conditioning during summer.

The apartment, measuring 105 m2, is a model of modern, sustainable living in Taiwan. Huang's use of simple materials like cement finish, cast iron, stainless steel, and wood, and his insistence on retaining the building's originality, add to the uniqueness of the design. Over time, these materials will show traces of the years, adding a sense of intimacy to the space.

Lane 19 Art St., completed in 2017 in Taichung, Taiwan, is a shining example of how design can be used to promote a green lifestyle. The project's success is evident in its Silver A' Design Award, a prestigious accolade awarded to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. This recognition underscores the project's technical excellence, artistic skill, and the positive feelings it evokes.
