Mu. Mu.

A Multifunctional Residential Apartment Design

Enhancing Small Spaces with Multifunctionality

The Mu. Mu. residential apartment design, created by Johnson Huang, focuses on enhancing the use of small spaces through the concept of multifunctionality. Each space within the apartment serves multiple purposes, allowing for flexibility and maximizing the available area. For example, the study can also be used as a studio or a playroom, and when necessary, it can be transformed into a guestroom. This innovative approach to design creates a harmonious and adaptable living environment.

The unique strength of the Mu. Mu. design lies in its emphasis on multifunctionality. In small-scale apartments where space is limited, fragmented compartments can make the area feel even smaller. By making each space multifunctional, the design effectively enlarges the living space. One notable example of this is the combination of the dining table and the kitchen island. This dual-purpose feature not only provides a platform for dining and meal preparation but also serves as a space for relaxation and tea time.

The realization of the Mu. Mu. design incorporates various techniques and materials to create a visually appealing and functional space. Wood is used for the ceiling in the living room, complemented by horizontal and vertical black lines that add depth and a sense of flow to the space. Additionally, an open plan design is employed to create a more spacious public area, with glass partitions used to define the study while allowing ambient light to flow through the living room.

The Mu. Mu. residential apartment spans 172 m2 and was completed in Taichung, Taiwan, by the end of 2016. The design team, led by Johnson Huang, carefully considered the interaction between different areas of the apartment. In the living room, a heightened space behind the sofa serves as an entertainment area and display cabinet. This layout allows parents to keep an eye on their children's activities, whether they are in the study or the living room. The inclusion of a nearby couch also provides a space for parents to relax while still being able to supervise their children.

The Mu. Mu. design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2018. This prestigious accolade recognizes the outstanding creativity and ingenuity of the design, which incorporates best practices in art, science, design, and technology. By improving the quality of life and making the world a better place, the Mu. Mu. design exemplifies the power of innovative and multifunctional design.
