Quaint & Quirky Dessert House: An Architectural Homage to Bird Nests

Chaos Design Studio's Innovative Dessert House Inspired by Nature's Comfort and Privacy

The design team at Chaos Design Studio drew inspiration from the comfort and privacy provided by bird nests. The aim was to create a unique venue where people could enjoy casual conversations over drinks and desserts in a unique and comfortable setting. The result is a virtual bird nest, realized through a collection of seating pods that mimic the form and function of a bird nest.

The unique properties of this design lie in its conceptualization and realization. The seating pods, designed in various forms and settings, serve as the central feature of the restaurant. Their vibrant structure and color create a sense of uniformity that ties together the ground and mezzanine levels, adding an attention-grabbing element to the ambiance.

The design was brought to life through sketches, with the team focusing on the layout to ensure a smooth flow within the interior. The result is a restaurant that is aesthetically pleasing and functional. The technical specifications of the project include the use of reinforced concrete cast in-situ technique for the staircase formwork and composite flooring for the extended curvature mezzanine floor.

The project, which started in July 2016 and was completed in January 2017, was carried out in Penang, Malaysia. The design team faced challenges in visualizing the concept and ensuring the strength and solidity of the building. However, they overcame these challenges, creating a modern contemporary vibe with a touch of nature that accurately reflects the delicious treats served in the restaurant.

The Quaint & Quirky Dessert House was awarded the Platinum A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that showcase unmatched professionalism, contribute to societal wellbeing, and advance the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology.
