Surga Tropis: A Tranquil Balinese-Inspired Club House and Landscaping

Bringing the Essence of Balinese Architecture to Pune, India

On a trip to Bali, renowned designer Mashesh Nampurkar found inspiration in the centuries-old Balinese architecture, a vernacular tradition influenced by Hindu culture. This influence led to the creation of Surga Tropis, a club house and landscaping project that seamlessly blends man-made structures with the beauty of nature.

The design of Surga Tropis stands out for its unique harmony with nature. By incorporating elements of Balinese style and modern aesthetics, Nampurkar has created a space that exudes tranquility and tropical charm. Traditional stone sculptures add an authentic touch, while the use of natural materials such as bamboo poles, teak wood, stone, and clay further enhances the connection to the environment.

Spanning a total landscape area of 2230 sq.m, Surga Tropis features an 80 sq.m club house with a front open pavilion that welcomes visitors with open arms. The landscaped garden, adorned with tropical decorative plants, seamlessly merges the club house with its natural surroundings.

The design philosophy of Surga Tropis revolves around the principles of Balinese architecture, which emphasize spatial organization and communal-based social relationships. The design incorporates four key aspects: good ventilation, a strong foundation, a massive structure, and a guarding wall. These elements not only provide a solid foundation but also create a calm and relaxing atmosphere that encourages reflection and harmony with the earth.

Located in Pune, India, Surga Tropis is a testament to the meticulous research and attention to detail that went into its creation. Nampurkar studied the philosophies and aspects of Balinese architecture to ensure an authentic design. The choice of tropical plants that can withstand the Indian climate was carefully considered, while timber and stone were used to construct the structures. Balinese stone sculptures were incorporated to add a traditional touch to the overall design.

Despite the challenges of working with such a vast architectural style, Nampurkar successfully composed a space that captures the essence of Balinese architecture while adapting it to the Indian context. Surga Tropis offers a serene and peaceful atmosphere, transporting visitors to a tropical paradise within the bustling city of Pune.

Recognized for its exceptional design, Surga Tropis was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Landscape Planning and Garden Design category in 2018. This prestigious accolade is a testament to the project's well-designed, practical, and innovative nature, meeting professional and industrial requirements while contributing to a better world.
