Nan Zhou's journey with Mu Dan poetry began in 2016, when he stumbled upon the profound verses that spoke directly to his soul. The poems evoked a sense of loneliness and melancholy, which Zhou found both intriguing and inspiring. One particular line, "Life is a harsh winter," struck a chord within him, leading him to embark on a creative exploration of his own emotions and memories.
Over the course of two months, Zhou meticulously crafted more than 30 paintings, each one a reflection of the emotions and themes found within Mu Dan's poetry. Through the use of vibrant colors and childlike brushstrokes, Zhou captured the essence of the verses, allowing viewers to experience the same emotions that stirred within him.
The Mu Dan series quickly gained recognition and acclaim, with the launch of the collection on the VANCL official website becoming a hot topic among literary enthusiasts. The subsequent editions were met with equal enthusiasm, leading to successful art exhibitions at prestigious universities such as Tsinghua and Peking. Scholars and poets alike praised Zhou's ability to convey the depth and beauty of Mu Dan's poetry through his art.
One of the challenges Zhou faced was the translation of poetry into visual form. He recognized that not everything could be literally translated, especially when it came to the nuances and emotions embedded within the verses. To overcome this, Zhou left blank spaces in his paintings, allowing viewers to engage their imagination and interpret the poetry in their own unique way.
The Mu Dan series, with its thought-provoking paintings, serves as a testament to the power of art and its ability to transcend language barriers. Through his creative vision, Nan Zhou has successfully brought Mu Dan's poetry to life, creating a bridge between literature and visual art that captivates and inspires.
For his exceptional work, Nan Zhou's Mu Dan series was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Fine Arts and Art Installation category in 2018. This prestigious accolade recognizes the ingenuity and creativity displayed in Zhou's designs, as well as their contribution to improving the quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
