Near Far House

A Unique Blend of Landscape and Architecture

The Near Far House, designed by Willis Pember, is a contemporary single-family residential project that seamlessly integrates with its surroundings, creating a harmonious blend of landscape and architecture.

Inspired by early cubist paintings, the Near Far House explores the congruence of dramatically different scales and proximities. Just like a painting, this design juxtaposes elements of varying sizes and distances to create a more immersive experience. The house acknowledges the matrix of landscape engagements, acting as a hinge or pivot in a series of configurations.

The primary materials used in the construction of the Near Far House include a composite steel frame, engineered wood floor system, and wood frame for the structure. The exterior features clear stained cedar 1x4 and concrete panel rain screens, stucco soffits, metal flat seam panels, and cast-in-place concrete. Inside, the house boasts honed concrete floors and plaster walls. The windows and doors are sourced from Loewen, including lift slide doors and a custom steel-clad front door.

With a living space of 306.6 square meters and a 44.2 square meter garage, the Near Far House offers ample space for a comfortable living experience. The design takes full advantage of the site, which spans 697 square meters, integrating both near and far landscape elements into the interior spaces. The upper floor allows for simultaneous experiences of both near and far conditions, while the living area seamlessly connects with outdoor settings.

One of the most significant challenges faced during the design process was integrating the new construction with an existing 1970s single-family home. The goal was to create a contemporary composition that complemented the older structure without replicating its vocabulary. The result is a cohesive design that reflects the spirit of its time.

Located at 1635 Silverking Drive in Aspen, Colorado, the Near Far House took five years to design and one year to construct. Throughout the process, extensive research was conducted to understand the nature of the site and materials, allowing for the creation of a truly unique enclosure that embraces its surroundings.

The Near Far House has been recognized for its outstanding design and creativity, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate resourcefulness, technical skill, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.

The Near Far House, with its innovative approach to blending landscape and architecture, stands as a testament to the power of design to create a more immersive and harmonious living experience.
