Agape: A Revolution in Tableware Design

id.real's Multifunctional Tableware Collection Reimagines the Art of Dining

Agape, a multifunctional tableware collection by id.real, redefines the dining experience by blending tradition with modernity. This innovative design, inspired by the evolving nature of shared meals, has been recognized with the prestigious Silver A' Design Award.

Agape was born out of a reflection on the changes that the act of sharing a meal has undergone in recent decades. The designers at id.real identified a disconnect between the traditional tableware and our contemporary lifestyle. They embarked on a journey to evolve these objects, resulting in a collection that not only adapts to small spaces but also caters to the diverse food we serve today.

The collection comprises of two main pieces and seven additional elements, all fitting into one. These include a pitcher, a circular tray, a handle/tray, a salad/soup serving bowl, three different size bowls, a platter, and an oven tray. What sets Agape apart is its multifunctionality. Each piece can be used independently or in combination with others, and some even have different purposes depending on which side they are used.

The production process of Agape is a blend of traditional and modern techniques. Porcelain pieces are produced using plaster molds and baked twice at high temperatures. Oakwood pieces are hand-turned and varnished with food-safe varnish, while marble pieces are crafted with a CNC machine and water polished for a shiny effect. This careful crafting process links tradition and modernity, reflecting the essence of Agape.

Agape's design is not just about aesthetics; it's about interaction. Each piece is ergonomically designed for easy serving and stacking. The angular pieces connect with each other seamlessly, and the multifunctional elements fulfill several uses intuitively. The salad bowl, for instance, can be transformed into a hot soup serving bowl by incorporating the Saturn ring-shaped tray.

The design process of Agape was a meticulous one, spanning from September 2017 to January 2018 in Madrid, Spain. The project was exhibited in February 2018 at id.real studio, as part of the Madrid Design Festival OFF. The design team, consisting of José A. Montenegro, Fabio Molinas, Marta García, and Charlotte du Payrat, overcame creative and technical challenges to create a set of aesthetically pleasing pieces that complement everyday and special occasions tableware.

In conclusion, Agape is more than just a tableware collection; it's a revolution in the art of dining. It crisscrosses the line between tradition and modern-day functional table objects, reinterpreting classical elements to suit today's lifestyle. The Silver A' Design Award is a testament to the innovation and creativity of id.real, setting a new benchmark in tableware design.
