Adam Miklosi's Dab: A User-Centric Approach to Medical Technology

Adam Miklosi's Dab is an innovative ECG holter patch that prioritizes user experience and behavior, aiming to improve the accuracy of medical examinations. This award-winning design is a testament to the power of user-centric design in the realm of medical technology.

Adam Miklosi's inspiration for Dab stemmed from the realization that the accuracy of medical examinations is influenced not only by precise measurements but also by ordinary user behavior. He observed that many patients behave differently under ECG holtering, leading to inaccurate diagnoses. While existing solutions focus on improving technology, Miklosi chose to address the user experience aspect, resulting in the creation of Dab.

Dab stands out from other ECG holter patches due to its unobtrusive design and focus on user behavior. It minimizes the size of the medical instrument by reducing electrode distances and records data with permanent high-quality dry electrodes. The unique method of applying the sensor onto the body makes it effortless and intuitive. These changes not only enhance the user experience but also significantly reduce disposable items, manufacturing, and maintenance costs.

The production of Dab involves two main elements: the sensor and the patch. The sensor is an injection-molded ABS plastic with a high-quality silver-alloy dry electrode insert molded. The patch was developed after testing around 30 different materials used in medication as a bandage, resulting in two proposals: a high-quality silicon and a textile version (used in kinesio tapes), depending on the user's activity level.

Instead of using regular disposable solutions, Dab integrates the electrodes into its body. The sensor is Bluetooth connected to a smartphone, and all data is stored in the Dab cloud. This design was realized after extensive research, including a Design Thinking workshop with doctors, patients, and designers, online and personal questionnaires with nearly 70 participants, and consultations with cardiologists in Germany and Hungary.

Dab's design journey was not without challenges. Finding the right patch material that would work on different skin conditions while also keeping manufacturing and cost factors in mind was the most challenging aspect. However, the end product is a testament to Miklosi's commitment to creating a user-friendly, efficient, and cost-effective solution. Dab's design is a perfect example of how technological innovation and user-centric design can come together to create a product that is not only functional but also enhances the user experience.

Dab's innovative design has not gone unnoticed. It was awarded Platinum in the A' Wearable Technologies Design Award in 2018, recognizing its exceptional, highly innovative design that contributes to societal wellbeing. This award is a testament to Dab's potential to redefine the aesthetics of an era, advancing the boundaries of art, science, design, and technology, and making the world a better place.
