Turning: A Revolutionary Approach to Office Space Design

MII-Design Transforms Gloomy Space into a Bright, Interactive Environment

Turning, an innovative office space design by MII-Design, has redefined the conventional understanding of interior and exterior spaces. The design, which won the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018, is a testament to the transformative power of creative thinking and design.

The inspiration behind Turning was to break away from the traditional, flat single-axis street view. By rotating the original interior space by 45 degrees, MII-Design created trapezoid and triangle spaces, which serve as intriguing areas that blur the boundary between the street (public area) and the interior (private area). This innovative approach not only adds an element of interest to the design but also enhances the connectivity between the interior and exterior spaces.

One of the unique features of Turning is its solution to the lack of natural light in the original space. The design team introduced a transparent glass square box, which allows natural light to flood into the conference room and office. This feature not only brightens up the space but also blurs the line between the inside and outside, creating a more open and inviting environment.

The realization of Turning required careful selection of materials and innovative application of technology. To maintain the pure white appearance of the design in Taiwan's rainy environment, the team chose paint with high weatherability. Large scale toughened glass was used to create a tidy and simple glass box for the conference room, minimizing cutting lines.

The design also takes into account the local culture and climate. The backward hinterland shaped by the wall and the glass conference room opens the view blocked by the narrow alley and provides an extra shelter and buffer area for Taiwan's rainy monsoon weather. The design also incorporates the concept of "entryway" in oriental culture, balancing the interior and exterior spaces.

Despite the challenges, particularly security concerns, associated with creating an open and transparent space, the team managed to create a safe environment with minimal visual intervention. The success of Turning is a testament to the team's belief that stiff grilles are not the only solution for safety and that trust in people and technology can create a secure and open environment.

In conclusion, Turning is a revolutionary office space design that challenges traditional notions of interior and exterior spaces. Through innovative design and thoughtful consideration of local culture and climate, MII-Design has created a space that is not only functional and aesthetically pleasing but also fosters interaction and connectivity. It is a shining example of how design can transform a space and improve the quality of life.
