The Great Indian Kebab Factory

A Modern Twist on Traditional Indian Cuisine

The concept behind The Great Indian Kebab Factory was to evoke a sense of nostalgia in the minds of local patrons while still maintaining a contemporary atmosphere. The design team achieved this by incorporating traditional Indian motifs in brass into the intricate art pieces that adorn the walls.

The restaurant's layout is centered around the live kitchen, which serves as the focal point of the space. This allows patrons to witness the preparation of their kebabs and adds an interactive element to their dining experience.

The flooring of The Great Indian Kebab Factory features a mosaic of large broken stones with black granite borders, giving it a unique and rustic look. The ceiling is made of painted MDF and wooden rafters, with sections of exposed mild steel adding an industrial touch. The walls are clad in exposed brick, further enhancing the antique aesthetic. To highlight these wall elements, a painted blue background has been used.

Spread across a total area of 200 square meters on a single level, The Great Indian Kebab Factory offers a unitary space with minor partitions between tables to create a sense of privacy. The entryway is accentuated with specialty glass lights from Firozabad, India, while a private dining area on the left features an accentuated ceiling.

The design team faced challenges in creating a unitary space within a large plate, but they successfully resolved conflicts by incorporating accentuated ceilings and nearly invisible partitions. The result is a harmonious blend of modern and traditional elements that captivate patrons.

The Great Indian Kebab Factory, located in Sector 26, Chandigarh, India, was completed in December 2017 after starting in April of the same year. The design process involved extensive research on mosaic flooring with large stones and the interaction between open kitchens and patrons.

This exceptional design by Devesh Pratyay has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in 2018 for its well-designed, practical, and innovative approach. The Great Indian Kebab Factory truly stands out as a testament to the fusion of art, architecture, and culinary excellence.
