The Efjord cabin, located on the Halvarøy island in the Efjord fiord of Northern Norway, is a marvel of modern architecture. The clients were captivated by the site's natural beauty, panoramic views, and orientation. These elements became the primary inspiration for Stinessen's design. The cabin is strategically placed to allow seamless interaction with the natural terrain and to maximize the views and sunlight throughout the day.
What sets the Efjord cabin apart is its dualistic design that reflects the natural terrain. The higher part of the cabin closes itself to the west and opens towards the morning sun and the terrain on the eastern side. Conversely, the front end of the cabin opens up to the dramatic mountains in the south and the fiord and the evening sun to the west. This conceptual layout not only provides stunning views but also ensures privacy for the occupants.
The cabin was constructed on-site using mainly wooden structures. The exterior consists of structural glazing and core pinewood treated with iron sulfate to achieve an even patina. The interiors are clad in birch veneer and granite tiles, reflecting the local flora found around the cabin. The sauna interiors and the ceiling of the sauna and bathrooms are clad in aspen slats, chosen for their hygroscopic properties.
At 190 sqm, the cabin offers an open space dining and living room that focuses on the panoramic views, providing a retreat from the city's hectic life. The relationship to the close terrain was a crucial element in the planning process, offering a sense of isolation and total privacy.
The project, which started in October 2015 and was completed in November 2017, faced several challenges due to the harsh climatic conditions of Northern Norway, including hurricane winds and heavy snow loads. However, the two volumes of the cabin interact in terms of stability, allowing the structure to open up to the different views.
In conclusion, the Efjord cabin by Snorre Stinessen is a remarkable example of how innovative architecture can blend seamlessly with nature. Its unique design, inspired by and respectful of its surroundings, has rightfully earned it the Golden A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design in 2018.
