Nansha Yacht Club: A New Landmark Infused with Cultural Connotations

Architects Jing Mo and Qingling Zhang's Award-Winning Design

The Nansha Yacht Club stands as a testament to the power of design and architecture. Its facade, though concise, houses an enriched interior space. The main tower's shape and size draw inspiration from the Croatian Dubrovink Castle, with natural materials and deep-concave windows used to create a simple facade that echoes a classic traditional style.

What sets this design apart is its ability to fully excavate the historical and cultural connotations of the project site. Located opposite the famous Humen Fort, the yacht club building is imbued with a cultural significance that is hard to ignore. The design takes into account the local climate, ensuring all functional rooms have good lighting and ventilation.

The realization of this design is a testament to the architects' ingenuity. A romantic garden is designed to the south of the banquet hall for outdoor banquets. The facade, made of natural stone, features three continuous arches. The roof is a sloping one, with transparent glass between the wall and the roof, creating a contrasted effect. The facade of the pool area, fitness, and children's play area is all made of heavy stone, interspersed with the Humen Fort.

According to function, the entire building is divided into a number of sculptural body blocks corresponding with each other, forming a simple and connotative building facade. The main entrance is located to the south of the lobby, with a cultural square designed at the entrance. The observation tower on the fifth floor offers a panoramic view of the pier. The building, rich in form and strong in sculpture, forms a new and meaningful architectural image with the cultural square, arch space, and corridor.

The Nansha Yacht Club project was completed in 2017 in Guangzhou, China. It faced challenges in balancing the relationship between buildings and surroundings and highlighting the historical and cultural connotations of the project site. However, the architectural design managed to fully excavate these connotations, making it a new landmark. The project has been appreciated by the majority of users and has achieved good economic and social benefits.

The design's excellence was recognized with a Silver A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2019. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The Nansha Yacht Club, with its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, truly embodies these qualities.
