Time in a Circle: A Magnificent and Refined Boutique Hotel Style Residence

Creating Harmony and Indivisibility in Design

The client, a successful enterprise founder, longed for more shared spaces to foster parent-children interaction. Inspired by the elegant quality and relaxing ambiance of boutique hotels, designers Li-Hsu Tsai and Morse Wang crafted a unique and harmonious residence that combines luxury and practicality.

Historically, the circle symbolizes harmony, completeness, and indivisibility. Drawing from this symbolism, the design of Time in a Circle incorporates prominent circle elements, reminiscent of traditional oriental architecture. To create a sense of openness and reduce any feeling of oppression, round columns and voided partitions were strategically placed, allowing for storage while maintaining a spacious atmosphere.

The realization of this design involved meticulous integration of materials such as marble, tile, glass, wooden floor, veneer, and gloss paint. These elements were carefully selected to create a refined boutique hotel style. Different types of marble were used to cater to various ambiances and moods, with Angora Pearl exuding grandeur in the living room, white Carrara White adding a minimalist touch to the kitchen, and dark grey marble creating a relaxing bathing space for the client.

Privacy was a key consideration in the design, as the residence is located in Taichung City. The overall interior space was divided into two main segments: public reception and private family spaces. Dark glass doors and modern geometric-shaped doors were used to separate these areas, allowing visitors to enjoy their visit while ensuring uninterrupted residential living for the family members.

Time in a Circle was designed to facilitate shared experiences among family members. The living room, reading area, kitchen, and dining room were linked to create a flowing line of circulation, serving as the daily focal point for work, reading, dining, and conversation. Additionally, the design features a flexible two-way movement path with multiple openings to outdoor terraces, seamlessly connecting the indoor and outdoor spaces and providing captivating vistas.

The project, which began in June 2017 and concluded in February 2018, presented several challenges. The circular-shaped site, with its RC construction structure and curtain wall windows, required complex partitioning treatment. The design team successfully preserved some of the original glass windows, allowing natural light and views of greenery to permeate the interior. This intricate technique exemplifies the commitment to harmony and refined detailing.

Time in a Circle is a testament to the fusion of art, architecture, design, and lifestyle. By drawing inspiration from boutique hotels and incorporating unique elements, Li-Hsu Tsai and Morse Wang have created a residence that exudes grandeur, luxury, and practicality. This exceptional design was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2019, recognizing its well-designed, practical, and innovative nature.
