The Shelter: A Unique Duplex Mountain Villa

A Harmonious Blend of Nature and Design

A forest wraps a house, a house wraps some rooms, where the connection of spaces wrap the house owner and his family. The designer said. The hostess favors calligraphy and the host takes pleasure in collecting artworks, so the style of the mountain residence in the suburbs of Taipei focuses on nature, humanism and emotions.

The Shelter, designed by MA KAI CHUN, is a 35-year-old duplex mountain villa that has been transformed into a stunning example of modern architecture. The design aims to explore the relationship between the surrounding environment and transparency, creating a multi-layered cubism that seamlessly blends with nature.

One of the standout features of The Shelter is the TV cabinet, which plays a central role in the space. Inspired by the concept of a kitchen island, the cabinet creates six traffic flow areas and functions, including the foyer, living room, dining room, kitchen, countertop, and study. With its multifunctional design, the cabinet even integrates the function of a dining table, maximizing space efficiency.

The interior of The Shelter is approximately 160 square feet and features a sloped roof, adding to its unique charm. The design team faced challenges such as high humidity and peeling paint on the walls, but with their expertise and attention to detail, they were able to overcome these obstacles and complete the project within just four months.

The design of The Shelter also incorporates innovative elements, such as a room divider made of stainless steel knitting. This divider not only provides a unique and elegant aesthetic but also allows for hanging pictures, plants, or photos with precise load capacity calculations. Additionally, the hollow-out design on the bottom of the divider makes cleaning a breeze.

In the master bedroom on the second floor, a large window has been strategically placed to avoid direct views from the first floor. This attention to detail ensures privacy while still allowing ample natural light to flood the space. The use of wood veneer and baking paint on the dining room ceiling highlights the structure of the sloped roof, creating a visually stunning focal point.

The Shelter is a testament to the creativity and resourcefulness of MA KAI CHUN and his design team. Their ability to seamlessly blend nature, art, and technology has resulted in a truly unique and harmonious living space.
