The conception of Cecilip's new image involved designing a facade that not only resembled the female silhouette but also provided a striking, attractive commercial image for the clinic housed within. This singular envelope of organic forms not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also protects the building by reflecting solar rays and creating a ventilated chamber that separates it from the structure.
The facade's design is an envelope created from a parametric model, made locally and composed of over three thousand stainless steel profiles with a mirror finish. Each profile consists of two CNC cut pieces, armed with 3M structural tape, similar to those used in aviation, on a metal support structure. This innovative use of materials resulted in a facade similar to other types of coating such as copper or zinc, which are significantly more expensive.
The facade occupies an area of 752 square meters in elevation, with a length of 27 meters x 12 meters in height and 2.5 meters in depth. Despite being located in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, where temperatures can reach up to 40 degrees Celsius with 80% humidity, the building stands strong, making it the only one of its kind in the country and the Caribbean.
Creating this architectural masterpiece was not without its challenges. The biggest hurdle was constructing each custom piece on-site, turning the design concept into a sculpture and an emblematic piece of architecture in the Dominican Republic. Despite the lack of necessary technology and high import prices, the team managed to create a completely local result, with the help of the country's best specialists. They also conducted various tests, including light reflection, wind, seismic, humidity, and climate analysis, to ensure the building's durability.
Winning the Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2019, Cecilip is a testament to Dante Luna G.'s innovative design approach. The design's success lies in its ability to blend form and function seamlessly, creating a building that not only serves its purpose but also stands as a symbol of high technology and sophistication.
